One day I was walking with my well trained German shepherd, Krishna, off lead
down a Manhattan street. Suddenly Krishna veered off to stare through a grating in
the sidewalk. I called to him but he didn't move so I walked over to see what he
saw. Just below the grating, on a ledge, crouched a small grey cat. I picked
up the grating, removed the cat & brought it to my apartment. Krishna was
excited, the cat was scared so I separated them by French doors. They sat & stared at
each other from either side of the glass for a while so I opened the doors & they were
together. I named her Miss Cat & after days of preening, Miss Cat turned into
the black & white sweetie you see above. When my girlfriend moved in with
me, Miss Cat scratched & hissed at her for weeks, finally knuckling under to the
notion that another woman was going to sleep with me. Miss Cat lived with us until I
had to put her to sleep when she didn't have the strength to walk any more -- cat cancer
took her from us. But she will always be my first love. Shhh. Don't tell
Jessica, Carol or Sam. |
