I'm strongly against the sale of puppies in pet stores. I started to compose a list of reasons why I feel this way then decided to check the www knowing that others had probably put it far better than I could. Sure enough the first ones I came across said it well. I've listed just some of the URLs here.

The sale of puppies through pet stores supports irresponsible breeders be they puppy mills or backyard breeders. Pet stores are there to make money not to look out for the best interests of dogs that they sell.  If they were they'd be trying to find homes for adult dogs rather than sticking to the cute cuddly impulse item puppies and they'd replace their "Xmas Puppies for Sale" sign with one that reads "Puppies are forever, not for Xmas".

There will always be abandoned puppies unfortunately but rescue groups and SPCA shelters are better placed to ensure that the puppies get the necessary medical attention, that they will be spayed or neutered and that they will find homes where they will be loved. Not only are these groups not profit motivated they have a vested interest in finding good homes for these puppies. If they don't they know that those puppies can come back to them as adult dogs with potential problems and being much more difficult to place.

It is up to all of us to educate current and future dog owners about the responsible care and breeding of their animals. I understand that public pressure has been successful in convincing some pet stores to stop selling puppies. I hope this trend continues. [...]
