Getting an ILP# For your Rescue Dog

by Glenda Szkrybalo

So many times in my follow up calls to new owners of rescued Bouvs . I hear "Oh how I wish I could compete in obedience or herding with this guy!"  "He’s So smart." or "She herds EVERYTHING!"

My answer to them is you can!  You can apply for an ILP #

ZekeCarting.jpg (23913 bytes)An ILP # is an AKC registration for Pure bred dogs that for one reason or another are unable to be registered with their "Papers".  ILP stands for Indefinite Listing Privilege. It enables an AKC recognized Pure bred dog to be registered with AKC & participate in all AKC sanctioned events EXCEPT conformation..   Including Obedience Trials, Tracking tests, Herding, Lure Corses, Agility, Earth Dog Events & Hunting Tests . The animal can not be listed in any stud books.   Dogs with ILP# can earn titles just like any other registered dog.

The requirements are that the dog be spayed or neutered, be at least 6 months old.  Two color pictures: one of the front view & the other a side picture of the dog standing must be supplied along with the completed form & $25.00.   It takes 4-6 weeks to process the application & the $25.00 is refunded if the AKC does NOT Grant the ILP #.

ZekeTherapy.jpg (18287 bytes)The # 5 question on the ILP form to me seems a little tricky , it asks  "State your reason for believing this is a pure bred dog."  I have found it helpful to get a letter from a breeder or a vet and attach it  to the form.

And Now thanks to the wonderful world of the Internet, you can Download the ILP # Application from AKC’s web site @   http://www.akc.org/regforms.htm or you can go the old fashion route & contact the AKC by telephone or mail.
