THE SMELLY BEARD
They Aren't Called 'Dirty Beards' for Nothing
Excerpts from the BouvLovers email list

Q Wondering if anyone has had a Bouv with a really bad smelling beard... [snip]  Any ideas of what try to get rid of the smell???

A1  Here are a couple of things to try.

1) Comb through the beard after each meal. Spraying a little waterless shampoo on the beard before combing might help.

2) Wipe the beard down with unscented baby wipes.

3) In case the odor is coming from the mouth, you might try spraying the teeth with Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. It is really great for the teeth and gums even if it does not help your problem.

A2    [snip]  it took a trip to the vet to discover that Miss B had a folded over bottom lip that was chafed, holding food and even puss (ugh).  It is supposed to be quite common and our checking didn't find it. We now keep the hair just at the lower lip line shaved weekly and wash it with a solution of peroxide and water daily. She only needs a full beard wash occasionally now. One or two days of skipping the routine brings on a terrible odor. This may not be your problem but it is worth checking.

A3   My Bouvs are on the BARF diet, so their beards get washed after each meal to avoid getting smelly. I spritz with lots of water, follow with no-rinse shampoo and then towel dry. If it gets worse than that, I get a bowel of warm water, some gentle dog shampoo, sit the dog on the grooming table, wash the beard, rinse the beard, towel dry.

A4   You could try using Miracle Groom Waterless Shampoo. It's safe for use
on facial areas and is made with all natural ingredients. You spray the area, let it sit for a minute then towel rub. It will clear up the odor and not harm your pup.
