 DISTEMPER CURE?

There is hope.

I had posted several weeks ago that a local rescue group learned about and used a vaccine, which dramatically turned around several dogs that were showing signs of distemper. Eric, from this list, also used this vaccine on his rescued Dutch shepherds, and the results were equally dramatic.

A serum, developed by a veterinarian in California, Dr. Sears, is being successfully used in shelters in Arizona and by vets there and in Texas and California (areas with a large influx of residents who originally lived outside the U.S. - very similar to Miami's population base). Dr. Sears has been using it for over 20 years with fantastic results - dogs who were suffering and dying from distemper turned around within 24 hours and are thriving today. Very simply: the serum is made by injecting a healthy large breed dog (not one who has survived distemper) with a vaccine used to counteract the NewCastle Disease, which attacks poultry. Twelve hours later, blood is collected from the dog and run through a centrifuge. The resulting product is the vaccine. The donor dog is not hurt in any way. The protocol for making the serum can be viewed at this link: http://www.searsvet.org/prod03.html.

Yesterday I spoke with Dr. Sears to see if there was a way our vets here in Florida could obtain his serum. He said that he does not have a supply of the vaccine for distribution but that any vet can make the vaccine and administer it. He also said that within a few months, he will post when there is serum available, and those who need it can let him know. His web address is www.searsvet.org.

In the meantime, he said that if a dog is acutely ill and if the serum is unavailable, give to 1 cc of the diluted Newcastle vaccine IV. This vaccine (live virus) can be purchased at many feed stores.

For all of you who are dealing with the agony of distemper, please encourage your vets to either consider making the serum or at least to administer the Newcastle vaccine, which can be purchased at your local feed store. Eric's dogs and the others that were cured in Miami were administered the poultry vaccine only, and it worked!
