Dear Marcia:

I need some clarification on the ABRL guidelines.

What should a non-ABRL member do a Bouv is in immediate need of help?
Take the time to try to contact an ABRL representative or should they take action?

If a 'civilian' makes a sincere effort to contact their regional representative but gets no response & is up against an execution date, what should they do? How long should they wait?

And if finally the non-ABRL member helps a Bouvier in need, specifically, what kind of help can they expect from the ABRL, assuming proper documentation?

When a non-ABRL member finds a Bouv in need that person should contact the ABRL coordinator in their area or me. If time is of the essence, they may 'rescue' the dog and the ABRL will do everything possible to help with the Bouv. We do not pay for dogs listed in the newspaper, pet shops or from individuals. We do pay shelter fees when a dog is pulled from a legitimate shelter.

Keep in mind, that we do have a foster agreement that the person must sign and abide by if they intend to foster the dog for the ABRL. If they cannot foster the dog, we will find a foster home. The ABRL will not take in or place a Bouvier with a bite record.

Dogs needing veterinarian care over the $250 listed in the Guidelines, must have approval of the regional coordinator and/or me. $250 is the amount we recoup in the adoption fee. However, the average cost of vet care for a rescue this year is $400-$450. Only because we have many generous donors are we able to keep the adoption fee at $250.

Anyone fostering a dog for the ABRL receives reimbursement for all vet care as per the above. The dog is listed on the www.bouvier.org website (click here) as well as petfinder. The ABRL accepts the apps, helps arrange a home visit and transport in conjunction with the new owner, once the adoption is approved.
