On Saturday night, I had just completed baking 4 layers of a very large wedding cake. The Bouvs had been put outside for the duration to help keep the kitchen as clean as possible. I had wrapped the cakes in freezer wrap and took 3 to the utility room, where we keep the freezer. The 4th cake had not cooled adequately so I left it wrapped on the kitchen counter.

When I returned to the kitchen I found Pia standing on her hind legs at the counter with a mouthful of cake. Not only had she managed to open 2 doors but she had carefully removed the masking tape with her teeth and opened the wrapper WITHOUT TEARING THE PAPER. Have you ever seen a dog's guilty smile with a beard full of cake crumbs??

I have spent most of today making the rest of the cake, including a replacement layer. I don't think I shall let the bride know the hazards that faced her cake.

By the way, 4 years ago we got a rescue pup, Rosie, who is wonderful but has learned to be a thief from Pia. They both stand on hind legs to survey the counter tops. Last year I was preparing the Thanksgiving dinner. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw 2 guilty Bouvs making off with the turkey. I quickly removed this rather large bird from their jaws and then announced to the family that I would just carve the bird in the kitchen this year. I removed the tooth punctured sections and the family never knew the difference.

We shall be traveling to Michigan to get another rescue pup. With Bob being 12 and Pia almost 10, this will be a wonderful opportunity to add another family member.
